Music Spotlight: courtship.

Indie-pop duo courtship. wrote an unofficial campaign anthem for Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders A Little Bit Bernie—out today—just in time to blast on your way to the polls on this Super Tuesday. Amidst working on their next album, the pair composed of Micah Gordon + Eli Hirsch, felt that the Bernie movement was lacking a campaign song and took action to bring us the incredibly light-hearted meme track we didn’t know we needed. "It’s funny to us that Bernie is seen by some as radical. Equal pay, universal health care, fighting climate change, dignity and rights for immigrants, and a commitment to end seemingly endless wars? Honestly—just sounds human,” the duo explained. “We also have a special connection to him since we often find ourselves embodying his personality—before you know it, we might end up looking, sounding, and acting like Bernie." Proceeds from the track will go to supporting Bernie's campaign. We chatted (read: laughed) with Micah about the track + what’s next for the pair.

Asymmetric Magazine: As huge Bernie supporters ourselves, we're loving A Little Bit Bernie. Can you speak to why you made him an unofficial anthem and how the track will support Bernie's campaign?
Micah Gordon: We thought it was official! They paid us the big bucks! No, but imagine if he walked out to the song and everyone knew the lyrics? It would help immensely and probably propel him into the white house. Bernie cares about helping humanity, and he’s fired up. The world could benefit from us all getting a little fired up. Feel your inner Bernie, and get out and fucking vote on Super Tuesday to save our country.

The world could benefit from us all getting a little fired up.

AM: What's your outlook for the future of music's role in political and/or social change?
MG: Our hope is that in the future, it won't be Russia who affects elections, but it will be songs. Music has always taken a political stance but as of recent, not so much.

AM: Also loving the Schitt's Creek reference! Do each of you have a favorite character?
MG: We've both never seen the show, looks funny though.

AM: *laughs* Outside of A Little Bit Bernie, what are some themes you typically pursue through your music?
MG: We always try to be truthful—even if it’s a bit embarrassing. We usually end up making fun of ourselves. People take themselves way too seriously. It's time to stir up the damn pot.

AM: For first time listeners, how do you like to describe your sound?
MG: Our music is like riding a horse, bare back, on a beach, with a Tupperware of your best friend's mom key lime pie.  While the experience is thrilling, it's also humbling.

AM: What other musicians are you currently listening to? Do you have a favorite playlist you can share?
MG: We've been playing Rascal by RMR on repeat lately. Also Rascal Flatts’ rendition of Life is a Highway. Pretty much anything Rascal.

AM: What is something that inspires you outside of music?
MG: We love to get outside and hike. Also, as amateur chefs, cooking can be extremely therapeutic.

AM: Where is one place that you feel completely in touch with your creative self and your music?
MG: We started making music in my bedroom. Now I have a separate room in the house that I use, but it still has a homey feel to it. That will probably never change. We also used to to have a studio in an old airstream but sadly, that is no longer. Small spaces is the 2020 vibe. Bernie 2020.

AM: What can we expect to hear from courtship. next?
MG: New album coming this year!
