Music Spotlight: Gunnar Gehl
We’d like to introduce you to Southern California native Gunnar Gehl. The 17-year-old singer-songwriter is definitely one to keep your eye on. From posting John Mayer covers on Instagram to two recent releases, he’s making a huge impression on everyone who hears his sound. We chatted with him about his start on Instagram, his first single Ocean Blue, + his current tour. His newest single Outta my mind is out now, and we can’t wait to hear what’s next!
Asymmetric Magazine: Congrats on your recent releases! Tell us about your debut Ocean Blue.
Gunnar Gehl: Thank you! Ocean Blue is my first single! It's about walking past someone and having that connection moment with each other.
AM: What are you most excited about with your tour with PRETTYMUCH?
GG: What I'm most excited about with this tour is just growing as an artist and being able to perform my songs for so many people. I really just want to expand my fan base as much as possible.
AM: When you started posting your covers on Instagram, was the pursuit of a music career ever in mind or was it just a fun outlet?
GG: When I started posting covers I really had no idea what would come of them. I just wanted to show my love for music and let people see what I love to do. Looking back on that, it’s crazy to think how far we have come.
AM: How would you describe your sound?
GG: I would say my sound is an alternative pop. I really want my music to have a sound that people can always recognize whether they know it or not. I like to always include a little electric or acoustic guitar in my songs, but I always love mixing in modern day music beats and melodies.
AM: What themes do you typically pursue through your music?
GG: I'd say because I am 17 and in the heart of growing up, a lot of my songs are about relatable relationships or experiences with someone you care or have cared for.
AM: What other musicians are currently inspiring you?
GG: I'm constantly inspired by new music, but my main influence from a young age was John Mayer and Bruno Mars.
AM: Where is one place that you feel completely in touch with your creative self/music?
GG: You know, for me it isn't a real place where I can really connect with music. It's about my emotions at that period of time. Mostly I would say I enjoy music the most at night though.
AM: What can we expect to hear from you next?
GG: I don't know. I think I'm just ‘Outta My Mind’.
