Music Spotlight: Cody Lovaas
Meet Cody Lovaas. the LA-based singer-songwriter is teasing his forthcoming EP Honestly with his latest track Talk Slow, released last month, and we can’t get enough of his hypnotizing vocals. We chatted with Cody all about the single. + catch his show at Madame Siam on Tuesday, April 23.
Asymmetric Magazine: Congrats on your recent release! Can you tell us all about Talk Slow and what it means to you?
Cody Lovaas: Talk Slow is about recognizing a moment is special enough to want to slow it down. It’s the first story I wanted to share off of my, Honestly EP, which is truly the most raw and vulnerable look into my life; it’s like you’re reading from my diary.
AM: What was the creation process like for this track?
CL: This one was interesting because I wrote the song the same day that the whole story was created. I was at a party in Santa Barbara and drove straight back to LA to get in the studio and write about the whole experience day of.
AM: Are there any consistent themes you typically pursue through your music?
CL: Honesty. Everything is so so true to me.
AM: What other musicians are you currently listening to?
CL: I'm always listening to all kinds of music and artists but lately I've been jamming to Magic City Hippies, The 1975, Mac Miller and John Mayer (as always).
AM: We’re based in LA, too, so we love to ask: What role does Los Angeles play in your work?
CL: A huge part. I was living in San Diego before I moved up here, and it’s such a different pace. There's so much more you can do for your music up here, and I'm creating my story a lot quicker than I would have been if I stayed in San Diego.
AM: Where is one place that you feel completely in touch with your creative self and your music?
CL: I could be anywhere in the world, and as long as I have a guitar in my hand, I feel at home.
AM: What can we expect to hear from you next?
CL: A lot of music! I have an EP dropping on May 3rd and will definitely be hitting the road to do some touring, as well.
