Music Spotlight: The High Loves
Indie-rock band The High Loves recently released their killer debut EP Serotonin, capturing the pursuit of happiness amidst change. We chatted with the band about the inspiration behind the five-track masterpiece.
Asymmetric Magazine: Congrats on your release of Serotonin. Tell us a little bit about the EP.
The High Loves: Thank you so much! The EP is about losing someone you love all the while struggling to piece together a new life in a new city. It's about the different things we try and do to make ourselves happy. Each song has it's own vibe all the while following the same theme. You Already Knew That is the first track and the introduction. We then move into Winding Up Nowhere where energy and theme continues to build into Serotonin. The title track of the EP brings a hopeful attitude to the palate of the record. Dirty Minds, the fourth tune of the EP gives the listeners a teaser of the heavier side of The High Loves. The EP ends on the melancholic ballad titled High-Rise; it compares lost love to gentrification. We're super proud of the record and very glad to be able to share it with you today.

THL: Love, melancholy, passion, and wondering.
AM: What’s something you want people feel when they listen to your music?
THL: Raw and genuine energy is what we intend to project when we produce a track or play live in front of an audience. With Serotonin, we use it as a small introduction to the band’s diverse energy and sound.
AM: How would you describe your sound?
THL: We describe our music as 'indie-rock' with elements of punk music. Many fans and peers compare our sound to The Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, and Franz Ferdinand.
AM: Where is one place that you feel completely in touch with your creative self/music?
THL: All of us have different levels of comfort, but one place that we rise to the top together is live. Whether we had a bad or good day, we can always have fun, be creative, and have a good laugh when we are in front of a crowd.
AM: What other musicians are you currently listening to?
THL: The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Paul McCartney and his longevity as an artist, Half Moon Run, John Mayer, and many bands and musicians in the Canadian scene like Timber Timbre, Andy Shauf, and Alvvays.
